    Hi everyone,

I’m putting together an order of embroidery uniform patches and wanted to start a discussion for anyone who has been through the process, whether for a school, sports club, workplace, or community group.

After doing some research, I found there’s more to it than just sending over a logo. Here are a few things I learned that might help others:

Choose the right backing. Sew-on patches are the most durable and hold up best to repeated washing, while iron-on is quicker to apply but can loosen over time. Velcro works well if the patch needs to be removable or swapped between garments.

Keep the design simple. Fine text and tiny details don’t always translate well to thread. Bold shapes, clear lettering, and a limited colour palette usually give the cleanest results.

Think about size and placement. A patch that looks great on screen can feel too big or too small on a real garment. Check the sleeve, chest, or cap where it will sit before finalising dimensions.

Ask about thread and fabric quality. Uniforms get washed constantly, so it’s worth checking that colours won’t fade and edges won’t fray. A merrowed (overlocked) border helps patches keep their shape.

Order a little extra. New members join and patches get damaged, so having spares saves you from reordering later.

Ask for a proof first. Seeing a digital mock-up before production helps catch spelling mistakes or colour mismatches early.

I’d also recommend checking minimum order quantities and turnaround times, especially if you need everything ready before a specific date like the start of a school term or a season opener.

I’d love to hear from others here. Have you ordered uniform patches before? Which backing type worked best for you, and is there anything you wish you’d known before your first order?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips.
