I’m looking for some advice from parents who may have been through this before.

My teenage daughter has always been a fairly outgoing and motivated kid, but over the last several months we’ve noticed some changes that have us concerned. She’s become much more withdrawn, spends a lot of time alone in her room, and seems less interested in activities she used to enjoy. Her grades haven’t fallen dramatically, but her teachers have mentioned that she appears distracted and less engaged in class than she used to be.

I understand that adolescence comes with mood changes and a desire for more independence, so I’m trying to figure out what’s within the range of normal teenage behavior and what might be a sign that she needs additional support. We’ve had a few conversations about how she’s feeling, and while she’s willing to talk a little, she tends to downplay things and says she’s just stressed.

My spouse and I have discussed whether it might be helpful to schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist, but we’re hesitant to overreact if this is something that many teens go through. At the same time, we don’t want to ignore warning signs and wish we had acted sooner.

For parents who have sought psychiatric help for a teenager, what factors influenced your decision? Was there a specific change in behavior or pattern that made you realize it was time to get a professional opinion?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. This is unfamiliar territory for us, and we’re trying to approach it thoughtfully while making sure our daughter gets the support she needs if something more serious is going on.
