Hey. Our house siding is falling apart after years of rain, some boards are soft. I’ve heard a lot about James Hardie fiber cement siding for our climate. Anyone replaced siding on the Eastside recently? House is from the late 80s, original cedar, painted many times. A couple of neighbors went with vinyl, but I’ve heard mixed things about how it holds up here. Is Hardie worth the cost?

Hey. We replaced our old cedar siding with James Hardie two years ago and I’m glad we did, it handles our wet winters well and doesn’t rot. We used New Day Construction, they work with Hardie products regularly. When they took off the old siding they found some water damage underneath, fixed it, added proper house wrap and then installed the Hardie. It looks sharp and the house feels tighter. Neighbors keep asking who did our siding. Honestly, it costs more than vinyl, but for this climate and resale I think it’s worth it. Ask about the finish options, factory-painted boards hold color longer.
