Why am I finding it so difficult to publish a book online?

I’ve finished my manuscript, but I’m genuinely confused about how to publish a book online without making an expensive mistake. How do first-time authors choose between different platforms, services, and publishing routes? What should I check about royalties, distribution, rights, formatting, and hidden fees? I’d really appreciate serious, honest suggestions from authors who have actually published online. What problems did you face, and what would you do differently?
